Internship #: 001 (Printer Friendly Version)
Organization: Colorado Preservation, Inc.
Internship Title: Survey Coordinator
Credit Hours: 3
Total Work Hours: 120 (12 hours per week, June 2 - August 8, 2008)
Job Description:
The intern would assist with surveys of historic farming and ranching resources on the Eastern Plains of Colorado. Colorado Preservation, Inc. will be conducting two survey projects in 2008. For the first survey, Colorado Preservation will be driving every road in two counties, photographing all resources over 50 years old and creating an inventory of sites. Historic resources will include farmsteads, ranches, irrigation structures, railroad resources, agricultural processing and storage facilities as well as rural schools, churches, and abandoned settlements. For the second survey, Colorado Preservation is partnering with private landowners in southeastern Colorado to document resources on their ranches. This area is rich in history including Native American rock art, the Santa Fe Trail, 19th and early 20th century homesteads, and multi-generational cattle ranches.
The intern will assist the Survey Coordinator with various survey related tasks. Possible intern projects include conducting general research on the development of agriculture in eastern Colorado, researching specific historic properties, traveling to eastern Colorado to assist with the recordation of historic resources, and completing inventory forms for surveyed resources. The internship can be adapted to an intern's strengths and interests. For example, a history student might focus on developing historic contexts while an intern interested in architecture might visit sites to measure buildings and prepare sketch plans. Internship will be based in Denver; travel to historic sites is optional.
Location: If the intern is interested in doing some fieldwork, overnight travel would be required. They would travel with me so they would not need a drivers license or their own vehicle. Colorado Preservation would cover the cost of lodging; the intern may need to share a room with another intern. Typically trips to do fieldwork are at 2-4 days.
Pay Information: unpaid
Work Schedule: Intern should be available to work between 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday. Specific hours and days are flexible.
Qualifications: A successful candidate must have:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Be organized and detail-oriented
- Able to work independently
- Experience conducting historical research is essential
- Intern should be interested in rural issues, historic preservation, and the history of agriculture.
