Steven Leigh is a biological anthropologist whose research explores the interactions between humans and the microbes that contribute to digestive efficiency. He also studies human growth with a special emphasis on the growth of the brain. He has extensive experience in archaeology, palaeontology, and anatomy. His teaching at the University of Colorado Boulder focuses on the history of human evolution. Leigh received his B.A. from Northwestern University, M.A. from the University of Tennessee, and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He has served as dean of Arts and Sciences since 2012.
